The Frequency Reality Check

528 Hz “repairs DNA.” 432 Hz is “in tune with the universe.” Rife frequencies “destroy disease.” You’ve seen the videos with millions of views. So let’s actually hear them, watch the spectrum, and tell the truth about each one — calmly, with sources.

The short version: gentle sound can genuinely help you relax — that part is real, and it’s the same for almost any calm tone. But no single frequency repairs DNA, removes toxins, re-tunes your cells, or cures disease. Those numbers come from numerology and marketing, not biology. Where something real is going on, this page says so.

Hear it & see it

Tap a frequency. You’ll hear the exact tone and watch its live spectrum — almost always a single, ordinary spike. Keep the volume gentle; headphones help.

Blind test: can you tell 528 Hz from 440 Hz?

If 528 Hz had a special power, you’d expect it to feel different. It plays A then B in random order — pick the one that felt more “healing,” then reveal.

Where these numbers actually come from

528 Hz — the “love / DNA repair” tone.

Popularized by Leonard Horowitz and Joseph Puleo in the 1990s. There is no known mechanism by which an audible tone repairs DNA, and no controlled evidence for it. Musically, 528 Hz is just a slightly sharp C5.

432 Hz vs 440 Hz — the “tuning conspiracy.”

Concert pitch is an arbitrary convention; A=440 Hz was standardized by ISO in 1955. The idea that 440 is harmful and 432 is “natural” isn’t supported by evidence. 432 is perfectly pleasant — just not magical. (music psychologist’s review)

The Solfeggio set (174–963 Hz).

Derived from numerology, not ancient chant or physiology. No scientific support for the specific claimed effects. (overview)

“Rife” frequencies.

Royal Rife claimed specific frequencies destroy pathogens and cancer. The FDA has never approved a Rife device, and sellers have faced criminal fraud convictions. This is the one claim that can genuinely hurt people who delay real treatment.

None of this means sound is worthless — far from it. Calm sound, slow breathing, and music you love really can lower stress and help sleep. That benefit just doesn’t live in a magic number; it lives in the listening.

If you’re using frequencies for a serious illness — please read this. If you or someone you love is considering “Rife” or sound frequencies instead of medical treatment for cancer or another serious condition, please talk to an oncologist or physician first. Sound can be a comfort alongside care; it is not a substitute for it. In the U.S., the National Cancer Institute and your care team are the right place to start.
